Navigating the Magic: Essential Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

Caroline Bridges provided some of her insights on preparing for a Disney trip.  Caroline has Fragile X Syndrome and Autism.  For those that don’t know, Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes symptoms such as learning difficulties, sensory challenges, and anxiety.

Caroline’s tips are helpful for individuals who may have similar challenges. 

 

Here is a compiled list based on her suggestions:

 

Top 5 Tips Before the Trip:

1.     Download the Disney Experience App for scheduling and countdowns.

2.     Research and watch YouTube videos on the hotel where you will be staying. 

3.     Watch YouTube videos on rides to anticipate any potential triggers or discomfort. 

4.     Utilize Visual Packing/Daily Planner apps like Tiimo to ease packing and daily stress. 

5.     Apply for Disability Access Service (DAS) online to see if you qualify.

12 Tips for Packing Essentials:

1.     Headphones, earplugs, or air pods for noise sensitivity.

2.     Phone/iPad for entertainment and breaks.

3.     Portable charger.

4.     Poncho or Rain jacket in case it rains.

5.     Sunscreen.

6.     Hat/Sunglasses.

7.     Personal Blanket for comfort during travel and at the resort.

8.     Water Bottle for hydration.

9.     Keep snacks handy.

10.  Bring along favorite fidgets.

11.  Fanny pack or small backpack for carrying essentials in the park.

12.  Magic Band or lanyard for ticket.

 

3 Bonus Tips:

1.     Be Flexible with schedules, including possible later entry to the parks and/or returning to the room early.  

2.     Take regular breaks to prevent sensory overload and fatigue.

3.     Consider staying in a Disney Resort for convenience and flexibility.
