As parents, we all want our children to grow into curious, well-rounded, and kind adults. Traveling with our kids is one way to encourage this, but it's not always feasible. Between work schedules, school, finances, and other factors, we can't always be on the go. However, there are plenty of ways to keep your little ones craving adventure in between trips. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
Camera – Even young children can enjoy taking photos with child-friendly digital cameras. It's exciting to see the world through their eyes and discover what interests them. Your kids can use the camera both at home and while traveling.
Books – Reading is always a great way to nurture curiosity about the world. There are plenty of books out there that can support your child's desire to learn more. Consider atlases, fact books, books with plots in other countries, and books about different cultures and traditions.
Globe – Whether it's interactive or old-school, spinning a globe is a fun way to explore the world. It can also help your child understand just how big the world is and how small their home is by comparison!
Adventure Fund – Forget the piggy bank – designate a fund for travel experiences instead. This is a great way to get your children excited about their next adventure. They'll be more willing to contribute if they know the money is going towards something everyone agrees on, like a certain excursion or new luggage.
Binoculars – Encourage your child to explore the world up close with a pair of binoculars. They can use them on walks, while playing outside, or just to spot wildlife in your own backyard. Playing games like "I Spy" is a fun way to put them to use.
Local Experiences – Sometimes the best adventures are close to home. Visit local parks, farms, and zoos, or buy an annual pass to a nearby amusement park. Seasonal activities like skiing or a day trip to the lake can also be fun. Consider gifting experiences like these to help with costs.
I hope these ideas have inspired you to encourage your child's sense of wonder and adventure at home. And when you're ready to hit the road, don't hesitate to reach out – I'd love to help you plan your next family adventure!
